Evaluation Criteria

Power

Average power (mili-amps x voltage) will be calculated (50% of the evaluation, relative to the rest of the competitors).

Design Evaluation

A panel of practicing Engineers (see bios below) will judge your windmill designs (35% of the evaluation). You must be prepared to discuss/defend the design choices you incorporated into the design of your windmill. You will be given 2 minutes to highlight your design and 4 minutes to answer questions from the judges.

The design criteria you will be judged on include:

  • the choices/mechanisms by which you maximized power output
  • the aesthetics of your design
  • creativity
  • environmental choices (eg. did you use recyclable materials, can you easily take your windmills apart after the competition and reuse the parts?)

The judging will take place right before the testing of your design (if you cannot attend because of the reason outlined in the Rules & Constraints section, a video taped presentation will suffice discussing the above outlined design criteria).

Team Design Introduction Video

A 15% mark allocation will go towards a group video presentation.

The video will be marked on:

  • introduction of the team including team name, members and which city and school you hail from
  • what you are most proud of concerning the design and other creative aspects of the design (if you are in the preliminary stages of your design discuss what you are planning to do)
  • video quality, enthusiasm, and creativity, within the 2.5 minute time limit

The team design introduction video will be played in front of an audience during the competition day, please make sure the video is appropriate for a general audience.

Ensure that your video is correctly submitted to YouTube by the deadline (see Rules and Constraits page for dates) or you will receive a mark of 0. To submit your video see this link.

Judging Panel for WindENG2010

Meet the judges for WindENG.  Your group will be assigned a team of judges who will first meet you during the question panel portion of the competition and follow you through to see your results at the wind tunnel.  You will get a chance to speak with these Engineers about their job, education and ask them questions about alternative energy.

Maybe one day you will return to WindENG as a working Engineer!
